Against the Flames
Fire and fate have a way of bringing people together in the most unexpected ways.
Ben Calloway, a seasoned paramedic, returns to his hometown of Davis County after years away, carrying the weight of his past. With two decades of experience in emergency medicine, he knows how to handle chaos—but nothing has prepared him for what comes next.
Mateo Diaz, a dedicated firefighter, has always lived by the rules. Strong, steady, and deeply committed to his job, he thrives in the adrenaline-fueled world of fire and rescue. But when Ben enters his life, an undeniable connection begins to form—one that challenges everything Mateo thought he knew about himself.
As they navigate high-risk rescues, long shifts, and the unrelenting intensity of their work, the two men find themselves drawn to something far more dangerous than the flames they battle: their own emotions. Between loyalty, self-discovery, and the pull of an undeniable bond, both must decide if they are willing to step into the fire and risk it all.
A story of love, loss, and the courage to embrace the unexpected, Against the Flames is an unforgettable journey of finding home in the last place you’d expect.
Kaleidoscope Reader –
Against the Flames is a touching and powerful exploration of love, loss, and self-acceptance, wrapped in a gripping emergency responder setting. Vargas crafts a compelling romance that is both heart-wrenching and heartwarming, making this novel a must-read for fans of LGBTQ+ romance and character-driven dramas. While the pacing could be slightly tighter, the emotional payoff is worth the journey.

I really enjoyed reading it. Showing the support of the fire/EMS family really hit me in a way that helped me remember why I got into this in the first place. The story flowed very well and ept me reading straight through wonder when Mateo would allow himself to just let go and accept his feelings. Great job. I think the only thing I wanted different was a little more description and detail into their lives and thoughts.

Very touching. Must-read LGBTQ+ romance, and public safety characters are a plus. Writing style takes some adjustment, but overall well executed and great character development.
